Detecting Icebergs in Sea Ice Using Dual Polarized Satellite Radar Imagery
نویسندگان
چکیده
Two synthetic aperture radar (SAR) datasets with validated icebergs in sea ice were analyzed. A qualitative assessment of the data using false colour visualization methods for dual polarization SAR was conducted indicating that icebergs had an improved visually discernable signature from the background over single polarization SAR.A quantitative analysis was completed to exploit these observations. The algorithm development was focused on detection, false alarm removal and false alarm prioritization. The prototype software package developed around these algorithms presently supports RADARSAT-2 Wide and TerraSAR-X Stripmap imagery.

Most icebergs present in northern latitudes originate from western Greenland glaciers, from where they drift into Baffin Bay, circulating north along Greenland coast and south along Canadian coast. Some of them drift more southwards up to Newfoundland, where they frequently cross shipping routes. Furthermore, the Arctic summer sea ice coverage significantly decreased over the last three decades...
متن کاملTracking large tabular icebergs using the SeaWinds Ku-band microwave scatterometer
Knowledge of iceberg locations is important for safety reasons as well as for understanding many geophysical and biological processes. Originally designed to measure wind speed and direction over the ocean, SeaWinds is a microwave scatterometer that operates at 13.4 GHz (Ku-band) on the QuikSCAT satellite. Radar measurements from SeaWinds are collected and processed on a daily basis using resol...

A pixel-based methodology was established for automatic identification of icebergs 6 in satellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images, which were acquired during different seasons 7 and for different sea ice conditions. This includes in particular smaller icebergs (longitudinal axis 8 between 100 m and 18.5 km). Investigations were carried out for two test regions located in the 9 Weddell Sea...
متن کاملSea Ice Monitoring in the European Arctic Seas Using a Multi-Sensor Approach
Advances in satellite remote sensing of sea ice and icebergs in Arctic regions are described in case studies showing the benefits of using multi-sensor observations. It is demonstrated how Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) used in combination with optical images can improve discrimination of open water, nilas, young ice and three gradations of deformed first-year ice. The classification method is ...

Multi-polarization synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems are in particular useful for identification and separation of different scattering mechanisms and their sources in a medium (Oliver & Quegan, 1998, p. 319). The Canadian RADARSAT-2 (RS-2) carries a fullypolarimetric SAR system which measures intensities at VV, HH, HV and VH-polarizations as well as phase differences between the different...
